Encryption is something that many organisations need to understand and embrace in order to ensure regulatory compliance and guard against potential reputation damaging incidents.
Encryption covers a wide variety of things, however when related to IT, encryption is typically used to protect data both at rest (when being stored) and also when in transit.
Most people are familiar with SSL and the padlock symbol for accessing secure websites like online banking. This is a technology which protects data in-transit through encryption. Similarly, they should also be familiar with secure wireless networks requiring a password to access them to both ensure that access is authorised and to protect the data that network is transmitting.
Encryption can also be employed at a hardware level to encrypt data stored on disk drives as well as at the device level through tools like Bitlocker which transparently encrypt the contents of a drive and typically store the encryption key locally on the machine. This encryption means that should the device be lost or stolen, it is secure as the device can only be accessed by an authenticated user.
We can provide advice and technical assistance to implement encryption to secure networks, devices and systems in a myriad of ways. If you would like to talk to us about encryption, feel free to get in touch.
